Koryn Hawthorne is a soul and gospel singer, who at 18 years old, is best known for being a finalist in season 8 of NBC’s reality TV singing competition, The Voice. We recently talked to her about her journey as a young musician, and her process as a singer and how she is learning to steward the call of God in her life.

What’s your history with music & how long have you been a singer?
I have been a singer  for as long as I can remember. I grew up in my family’s church where music and the gift of singing was no stranger ! I don’t think there was ever a time music hasn’t been apart of my life , neither did I ever wake up and decide this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It’s truly a God given gift!

What was it like being on The Voice? How did you overcome any obstacles that you faced?
The voice was such an amazing experience! I learned so much from the show and had a great time. The fun thing about being there was experiencing the relationships that were build between everyone. There was NEVER a dull moment. From the people that work with wardrobe, to my vocal coach, to the guy who handed me my mic, they all became like family.

Being a Christian in the music industry is definitely challenging sometimes. Lots of people had their own visions of what it was they thought I should become. I’m so glad that I know who am as a person and as an artist. I’m proud of myself for staying strong and being able to express my faith on and off the stage.

Surrounding myself with positive things and people definitely keeps me inspired. I know my purpose in God is great, so that drives me to dream even bigger! Psalm 37:4 says that if I delight myself in him he will give me the desires of my heart! So why not? 🙂

How has worship impacted what you do and how you live?
Worship has impacted my life tremendously. I’m always looking for that moment to be with Him . I think the way I have grown would be how much I have learned about worship over the years. I didn’t cherish the moments like I do now. The most important thing I have learned is that it’s a conversation and it should be about the response He gives! I LOVE to worship! That’s something I literally want to do for the rest of my life.

What are your hopes for the future?
My hope for the future is to definitely continue to Inspire people through my music. I want to continue to grow, and become an established artist. I also hope to be active in other forms of entertainment.

What advice would you give to young artists like yourself?
What I would say to young creatives seeking to honor God  through their gift would be to stay strong no matter what. You have to know who you are in your creativity and in Christ. Make Him the number one reason you do what you do and He will work through you.
